Diablo V Announced: Sanctuary Has Fallen, Release Set for Spring 2029

Blizzard reveals Diablo V at the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony: the heroes are gone, Diablo has won. What is officially known, what is not, and what it means for Diablo 4 and Season 15

Diablo V is official: Blizzard revealed the next entry in the series on September 12, 2026, during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony and dated the release to Spring 2029. This article collects what Blizzard has said officially, separates it from press reports, and explains what the announcement means for Diablo 4 and Season 15. Last updated: September 13, 2026.

What Blizzard Officially Says About Diablo V

The announcement article is short and deliberately vague. Blizzard writes that for three decades Sanctuary has stood on the edge of oblivion, and that the darkness had been pushed back until now. The next era of Diablo is in development.

The key sentence reads: "Diablo V takes players into a Sanctuary that has fallen. The heroes are gone, and Diablo has won." The article closes with the question "What must you become when the world has already fallen?", signed by the Diablo V team with the line "Coming Spring 2029".

That is all. No classes, no platforms, no price, no beta, no hint of a pre-order program. The first details only came with the evening panel, see below. You can read the full text in Blizzard's article "Diablo V is Coming Spring 2029".

Official Diablo V Site and Teaser

Alongside the announcement, Blizzard opened the official site diablo5.blizzard.com. Its text is even shorter than the article: "Diablo V is in development. Sanctuary has fallen. Diablo won." It adds the teaser embedded above, the Spring 2029 window and an e-mail sign-up for updates. If you do not want to miss an announcement, register there. The site shows no platforms or screenshots; the classes only came with the panel.

Sanctuary Has Fallen: Why the Premise Is New

Every previous entry ended with a hero averting the worst: Diablo is defeated in Tristram, the Worldstone Keep falls, Malthael fails, Lilith dies. Diablo V picks up afterwards and flips the pattern. Evil has already won before you even enter the game.

What that means in practice, Blizzard has left open. The phrase "What must you become when the world has already fallen?" suggests that the question of who your character becomes is central, rather than the classic hero's journey. Kotaku additionally reports that the story is set a full century after Diablo 4 and that the teaser showed a brief glimpse of a hellscape. That time frame comes from coverage of the Opening Ceremony, not from the Blizzard article.

Panel Reveals: Heir to Westmarch, the Caravan and Three Classes

The "Diablo V: Forging the Next Era" panel on Saturday evening showed far more than the announcement article: the world, the first three classes and the direction of the item system. Blizzard summarized it in an official recap and posted the panel graphics on X. Here are the key points.

Diablo Rules From Westmarch

Diablo has conquered Sanctuary and uses it as a stepping stone to invade the Heavens. From the throne of Westmarch he wields the people and their souls as weapons in the Eternal Conflict. Unlike in every previous game, he is not the final boss at the end of the journey but present from the first moment, shaping the story, the world and your path.

Diablo V concept art: a crowned man in armor and cloak raises a sword on a dais before a crowd that includes horned figures

You play the Heir to Westmarch, on the run through the charred remains of a kingdom turned into an outpost of Hell. Few humans have escaped Diablo's rule. Some bowed before him or joined his cults, and a terrifying few were corrupted into Dread Commanders who rival the powers of Hell. Your mysterious connection to Diablo makes you both a threat and uniquely vulnerable to his influence.

The Western Continent is the heart of his reign of terror. The world itself is no longer stable: Diablo actively reshapes it, and terrain, points of interest, monsters and rewards can change when you return. Blizzard describes it as a procedural landscape.

The Caravan Replaces the Town

Survival is no longer tied to towns or conquered strongholds. Instead you build a caravan of allies that travels with you through the scorched wastes. They are vendors and companions at once, with pasts, stakes and scars from surviving Diablo's Sanctuary. Blizzard has named two of them: a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a stranded Treasure Goblin searching for meaning in a world where greed has lost its purpose.

The First Three Classes: Demon Hunter, Monk and Plague Knight

The first three Diablo V classes as sketches: hooded Demon Hunter, Plague Knight in spiked armor with a greatsword, and Monk with prayer beads

  • Demon Hunter: returns with twin crossbows, striking from the shadows and leaping across the battlefield.
  • Monk: brings martial perfection back, battering demons with fists and calling down holy power.
  • Plague Knight (new): the embodiment of walking death. They roam the battlefield spreading disease and pestilence, ultimately consuming it for power.

According to Blizzard these are only the first classes. The panel graphic promises Diablo's largest class roster yet, with details on combat, progression and builds to follow.

Items Modeled on Diablo II

Diablo V's itemization is inspired by Diablo II. Blizzard is experimenting with stat requirements on gear, larger items once again take up more inventory slots, and gear-based sets are returning. Crafting is meant to be rich and deep, inspired by Lord of Hatred's approach, with Diablo II-style Runes and Runewords. The stated goal: items that feel readable, memorable and worth chasing across hundreds of hours.

Diablo V item mockup: tooltips of a magic War Spear (tier 3, requires 60 Dexterity) and a rare Ancient Shield (tier 5, requires 119 Strength and 68 Intelligence) next to an inventory with slots of different sizes

A mockup from the recap shows the direction, explicitly labeled "in development content, not final": a magic War Spear at tier 3 requires 60 Dexterity, a rare Ancient Shield at tier 5 requires 119 Strength and 68 Intelligence. Items therefore carry attribute requirements and a tier again, and the shield lists nine affix lines including block chance, thorns and effects for summons. In the inventory next to it, spear, bows, sword and armor occupy several slots while rings and the amulet take one.

Concept Art From the Panel

All four images are labeled "Concept Art. Not final" by Blizzard. They show the direction, not the finished game.

Regular Updates From 2027

Diablo V is still early in development. Starting in 2027, Blizzard plans regular updates on progress, ideas and features, and wants to bring the community into decisions early.

What Is Not Known Yet

To avoid false expectations, here are the open points in one list. There is no official statement on any of them:

  • More classes: only Demon Hunter, Monk and Plague Knight are confirmed
  • Platforms: unknown, including whether PC and consoles launch together
  • Online structure: unknown whether Diablo V is a shared world with seasons like Diablo 4
  • Editions, price, pre-orders: nothing announced
  • Beta or test phase: nothing announced
  • Exact release date: only "Spring 2029"
As soon as Blizzard answers any of these, we will update this article.

What the Announcement Means for Diablo 4

Spring 2029 is roughly two and a half years away. Diablo 4 remains the active game in the series until then, and Blizzard backed that up at BlizzCon with concrete dates:

  • The Amazon joins as a new class. The class pack arrives in the first half of 2027 with four archetypes, the bow, the javelin and a new weapon type. All official details are in our Diablo 4 Amazon article.
  • The Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15, 2026. It bundles the base game plus the Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred expansions.
  • An animated Diablo series is in development by Blizzard and Netflix.
