Sanctuary Has Fallen: Why the Premise Is New

Every previous entry ended with a hero averting the worst: Diablo is defeated in Tristram, the Worldstone Keep falls, Malthael fails, Lilith dies. Diablo V picks up afterwards and flips the pattern. Evil has already won before you even enter the game.

What that means in practice, Blizzard has left open. The phrase "What must you become when the world has already fallen?" suggests that the question of who your character becomes is central, rather than the classic hero's journey. The "Diablo V: Forging the Next Era" panel on Saturday evening showed far more than the announcement article: the world, the first three classes and the direction of the item system. Blizzard summarized it in an official recap and posted the panel graphics on X. Here are the key points.

Diablo Rules From Westmarch

Diablo has conquered Sanctuary and uses it as a stepping stone to invade the Heavens. From the throne of Westmarch he wields the people and their souls as weapons in the Eternal Conflict. Unlike in every previous game, he is not the final boss at the end of the journey but present from the first moment, shaping the story, the world and your path.

You play the Heir to Westmarch, on the run through the charred remains of a kingdom turned into an outpost of Hell. Few humans have escaped Diablo's rule. Some bowed before him or joined his cults, and a terrifying few were corrupted into Dread Commanders who rival the powers of Hell. Your mysterious connection to Diablo makes you both a threat and uniquely vulnerable to his influence.

The Western Continent is the heart of his reign of terror. The world itself is no longer stable: Diablo actively reshapes it, and terrain, points of interest, monsters and rewards can change when you return. Blizzard describes it as a procedural landscape.

The Caravan Replaces the Town

Survival is no longer tied to towns or conquered strongholds. Instead you build a caravan of allies that travels with you through the scorched wastes. They are vendors and companions at once, with pasts, stakes and scars from surviving Diablo's Sanctuary. Blizzard has named two of them: a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a stranded Treasure Goblin searching for meaning in a world where greed has lost its purpose.

The First Three Classes: Demon Hunter, Monk and Plague Knight

• Demon Hunter: returns with twin crossbows, striking from the shadows and leaping across the battlefield.
• Monk: brings martial perfection back, battering demons with fists and calling down holy power.
• Plague Knight (new): the embodiment of walking death. They roam the battlefield spreading disease and pestilence, ultimately consuming it for power.

According to Blizzard these are only the first classes. The panel graphic promises Diablo's largest class roster yet, with details on combat, progression and builds to follow.

Items Modeled on Diablo II

Diablo V's itemization is inspired by Diablo II. Blizzard is experimenting with stat requirements on gear, larger items once again take up more inventory slots, and gear-based sets are returning. Crafting is meant to be rich and deep, inspired by Lord of Hatred's approach, with Diablo II-style Runes and Runewords. The stated goal: items that feel readable, memorable and worth chasing across hundreds of hours.

A mockup from the recap shows the direction, explicitly labeled "in development content, not final": a magic War Spear at tier 3 requires 60 Dexterity, a rare Ancient Shield at tier 5 requires 119 Strength and 68 Intelligence. Items therefore carry attribute requirements and a tier again, and the shield lists nine affix lines including block chance, thorns and effects for summons. In the inventory next to it, spear, bows, sword and armor occupy several slots while rings and the amulet take one.
