What Blizzard Officially Says About the Amazon
The announcement is part of Blizzard's big recap of the Opening Ceremony. Next to Diablo V, the Netflix series, Season 15 and the Switch 2 version, Blizzard gives the Amazon her own section titled "The Amazon Enters the Battle in 2027".
According to Blizzard, her return preserves the disciplined, athletic and highly trained warrior fantasy players remember. At the same time, the class is reimagined for Diablo 4. So this is not a straight copy of the old class, but a new take with its own systems.
Blizzard adds that additional class pack details will be shared at a later date. The panel made that more specific: class pack and purchase details will be available next year, closer to release.
New from the Panel: How Blizzard Approaches the Amazon
On September 13, host Rhykker sat down at BlizzCon with Senior Game Director Brent Gibson, Lead Game Producer Lily Gardner and Senior Lead VFX Artist Jayne Johnston to talk about the Amazon. The team gave the first look at the female-only class and explained how art, design and class fantasy came together. The inspiration was the Amazons of Skovos that players already met in Lord of Hatred.
The Diablo 4 Amazon rests on three design pillars:
- Battle expertise: she is a fiercely disciplined warrior first.
- Unrivaled athleticism as the second pillar of her class fantasy.
- Mythical magic: when needed, she leans into her mystical connection to her sister Amazons and her Askari ancestors.
The Amazon's Four Archetypes
According to Blizzard, the Diablo 4 Amazon is built around four gameplay archetypes. Since the panel, each one has an official description:
| Archetype | Playstyle according to Blizzard |
|---|---|
| Champion | Sword-and-shield melee fighter using buffs to reinforce herself and her allies |
| Skirmisher | Lithe, agile hit-and-run combatant tearing apart foes with the javelin |
| Ranger | Precision tactical archer who snipes and cuts down enemies from a distance |
| Commander | General dominating the field with phalanxes of Valkyries at her call |
That gives the Amazon four clearly separated roles: melee with support, fast javelin combat, ranged combat and a summoner playstyle. The Commander's Valkyries echo the Valkyrie the Amazon could already summon in Diablo II. It is still open how the archetypes work in the skill tree and whether they act like specializations. For builds, that is the most exciting question.

Bow, Javelin and a New Weapon Type
According to Blizzard, the Diablo 4 Amazon can wield the returning bow and javelin, which introduces an entirely new weapon type to Diablo 4. The panel adds that as a Champion she fights with sword and shield.
Bows already exist in Diablo 4, for example for the Rogue. It is therefore likely that the javelin is the new weapon type. Blizzard has not spelled that out, though. A new weapon type would matter for itemization: new Uniques, new Aspects and possibly its own affixes. The announcement artwork shows the Amazon with a lightning-charged spear and a round shield.
Skovos: The Amazon's Homeland
The Amazon hails from the island of Skovos. Blizzard first revealed Skovos in the Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred expansion, so players already know its shores from the current campaign.
In Diablo lore, Skovos has been the home of the Amazons for decades. In Diablo II (2000) the Amazon was one of the starting classes and came from there. Her three skill trees were Bow and Crossbow Skills, Passive and Magic Skills, and Javelin and Spear Skills. The Diablo 4 Amazon brings back bow and spear, but spreads her playstyle across four archetypes instead of three trees.
The Amazon Will Be the Ninth Class
Diablo 4 currently has eight classes: Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, Sorcerer, Spiritborn, Paladin and Warlock. The Amazon would be the ninth class in the game. You can already theorycraft every current class in the build planner. We will add the Amazon once her skills and values are official.
