Talisman: Everything About Seals & Charms

Setup, Seals, Set Charms & the Best Farming Method in Lord of Hatred

image

With Lord of Hatred, the Horadric Talisman returns to Diablo 4's endgame – inspired by the Charms from Diablo 2. It gives you a whole new power layer on top of your regular gear, without sacrificing a single equipment slot. This guide covers everything about Seals and the Talisman: setup, rarities, set bonuses and the best farming method.

In short: The Talisman holds one Seal (center) and up to 6 Charms (outer ring). The Seal decides how many Charms you can slot and which set bonuses are possible. No Seal, no Charms – the Seal is the foundation.

What is the Talisman?

The Talisman is a new itemization system from the Lord of Hatred expansion. You access it through its own tab in your inventory.

  • One Seal slot (center) + up to 6 Charm slots (outer ring)
  • The Seal in the center controls three things at once:
1. How many Charm slots are unlocked 2. How many of them can hold unique Charms 3. Extra random affixes (e.g. damage reduction, maximum life) and set affixes
  • The Charms in the ring provide the actual bonuses and unlock set bonuses
A Charm only works when it's slotted into the Talisman. Sitting in your inventory, it has no effect. The Talisman is pure bonus power – it stacks on top of your regular gear.

Unlocking the Talisman

You unlock the Horadric Talisman during the Lord of Hatred campaign – specifically at the quest "The Last of the Horadrim."

  • First time: Play the campaign up to that quest
  • In new seasons: Once you've completed the campaign, you can skip it – the Talisman is then available immediately.
  • Seals & Charms drop afterward as loot from dangerous enemies in the world. They are not quest rewards and cannot be bought from merchants – you have to farm them.

Seals in Detail

image

Seals are the heart of the Talisman. Each Seal specifies how many Charm slots it unlocks and comes with its own random affixes that – like regular items – can be rolled and optimized.

Seal rarities & slots

  • Magic Horadric Seal: 3 Charm slots – your entry point
  • Rare Horadric Seal: 4 slots
  • Legendary Horadric Seal: 5 slots + set affixes; the Bequeathed Horadric Seal (also legendary) unlocks a full 6 slots
  • Mythic Seals: 6 slots and – most importantly – they break the rules of the system (more on that below)
Rule of thumb for setup: Start with any Seal so you can slot Charms at all. Then move to a legendary Seal with as many slots and matching set affixes as possible. The mythic Seal is the endgame goal.

Legendary Seals

Legendary Seals typically unlock 5 slots and carry two set affixes tied to specific sets (e.g. Shadow Damage for "Shadow of Harash" or ranks to skills). The Bequeathed Horadric Seal even unlocks a 6th Charm slot – those are especially sought after.

When rolling, make sure the two set affixes match the set your build uses anyway.

Mythic Seals – the game changers

image

While normal and legendary Seals only improve the Talisman linearly, mythic Seals break the core rules of the system. All of them provide 6 slots:

  • Seal of the Diamond Mind – Reduces the number of Charms required for set bonuses by 1 (minimum 2). → You keep more set bonuses active at once (full 5-piece bonus with only 4 Charms, plus a 3-piece bonus with just 2 Charms).
  • Seal of the Severed Finger – Max 5 sockets, but you can equip up to 2 unique Charms.
  • Seal of the Golden Epiphany – Max 4 sockets, but you can equip up to 3 unique Charms.
Mythic Seals are the rarest drops in the expansion and only drop on the highest Torment tiers. Plan your farming sessions accordingly (see below). Alternatively, Nightmare Sigils can be crafted from 5 Nightmare Sigils in the Horadric Cube.

Charms in Detail

Charms go into the outer ring of the Talisman and provide the actual bonuses. They come in every rarity – but the biggest potential lies in Set Charms:

  • Set Charms – Multiple Charms from the same set unlock additional set bonuses (the core of the system)
  • Unique Charms – Powerful single effects; normally only 1 at a time (exception: certain Seals allow 2–3)
  • Legendary Charms – Solid stat sticks to fill out the ring
Even two Charms with the same name can have different values – so the system offers huge customization potential.

Generic sets (all classes)

Usually made up of 2–3 pieces and work with any class:

  • Dark Pact (2 pieces, 1 bonus)
  • Mastery (2 pieces, 1 bonus)
  • Slaughter (3 pieces, 2 bonuses)
  • Survival (3 pieces, 2 bonuses)
  • Practiced Technique (3 pieces, 2 bonuses)

Class-specific sets

Made up of 5 pieces and unlock up to 3 set bonuses. They are significantly stronger and can be found, among other places, at the Fallen Council in the Infernal Hordes. Examples:

  • Barbarian: Arms of Arreat · Berserker's Crucible · Bloodletter's Flow · Bul-Kathos' Pride · Sescheron's Fury
  • Druid: Nafain's Bestiary · Storm Shepherd's Call · Song of the Old Mountain · Might of the Den Mother · Rush of the Red Wolf Moon
  • Spiritborn: Balazan's Bite · Bliss of the Multitude · Kwatli's Grace · Rezoka's Rage · Wumba's Embrace
  • Warlock: Flesh of Abaddon · Shadow of Harash · Horazon's Chains · Rite of the Nameless · Fulcrum of Mefis
  • Rogue: Way of the Blurring Blade · Applied Alchemy · Legacy of the Sightless · Nilfur's Narrow Eye · Spellbound Steel
  • Paladin: Light's Epiphany · Heaven's Radiant Fire · Cathan's Iron Conviction · Cathan's Righteous Will · Cathan's Dauntless Faith
  • Necromancer: Art of the Bone Weaver · Peace of the Black Shroud · Rathma's Waking Touch · Radament's Desecration · Word of the Blood Binder
  • Sorcerer: Breath of the Frozen Sea · Cain's Wild Lightning · Habacalva's Cauldron · Tal Rasha's Threefold Way · Tiraj's Uncanny Insight

How do set bonuses work?

Slotting multiple Charms from the same set unlocks tiered bonuses (e.g. "(2) Set", "(3) Set", "(5) Set"). This is exactly where the Seal of the Diamond Mind shines by lowering the required count by 1.

Build principle: Choose the Seal by the set affixes and slot count your build needs. Then fill the ring with a matching set cluster plus one or two unique Charms for an extra kick.

Farming Seals & Charms

image

Charms drop everywhere in the world – Seals, especially mythic ones, require targeted farming.

Best method: Nightmare Escalations on Torment 10

The current meta is not grinding a single boss, but Nightmare Escalations on Torment 10 – the sweet spot between clear speed and maximum loot rolls per hour. On Torment 10, the drop rate for mythic Seals is already maxed out.

Mandatory upgrades:

  • 🔄 Recurring Nightmare – Bosses drop additional Escalation Sigils → near-endless key supply
  • ⚔️ Dread Revival – Bosses can resurrect after death → more boss kills per run
Golden rule: Don't play the highest tier you can barely survive – play the highest tier you can dominate in your sleep. More runs/hour = more "dice rolls" on your mythic Seal. Torment 12 with collapsing clear speed is worse than clean Torment 10.

Secondary source: Infernal Hordes & Bartuc

In a group, the Infernal Hordes are worth it: gather Aether to summon Bartuc – one of the most lucrative extra sources for mythic Seals. Rule of thumb: solo → Nightmare Escalations, in a group → switch to Infernal Hordes and loot Bartuc on repeat.

Extra: Kurast Undercity

For Charms and general yield, the Kurast Undercity is strong. Use the Horadric Tribute there (small or large version) to massively increase the number of drops.

Optimal loop

  • Warm-up: Nightmare Dungeons on Torment 10 – fill your inventory with Escalation Sigils, gather gold & materials
  • Turbo: Several Escalations back to back – don't leave elite packs standing, grab every chest, loot the end boss
  • Group: Once your crew is online → Infernal Hordes for Bartuc
Even if the mythic Seal doesn't drop, the time is never wasted: you finish the session with a full gold bag, better Charms and high-end materials.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Difficulty too high – clear speed collapses, fewer loot rolls/hour
  • Recurring Nightmare not unlocked – constant key shortage breaks the loop
  • Picking a Seal by looks instead of build – always check set affixes & slot count first
  • Ignoring the unique Charm limit – more than 1 unique Charm only with the right Seal (Golden Epiphany / Severed Finger)
  • Forgetting the Kurast Tribute – without it you leave tons of Charm drops on the table

FAQ

When do I get the Talisman?
During the Lord of Hatred campaign at "The Last of the Horadrim." In later seasons immediately, once the campaign is done.

Up to 6, depending on the Seal.

How many unique Charms at once?
Standard 1. With the Seal of the Golden Epiphany up to 3, with the Seal of the Severed Finger 2.

Are mythic Seals really worth it?
Yes – they break the system's rules (more set bonuses or more unique Charms) and are the clear endgame goal for any optimized build.
