Getting Started in Sanctuary – Your Diablo 4 Beginner's Guide
Everything new players need to know – from choosing a class to conquering the endgame
## Welcome to Sanctuary
Diablo 4 is an action RPG by Blizzard Entertainment where you fight against the forces of Hell as a hero of Sanctuary. This guide covers everything you need to know to get started in Season 12 – Season of Slaughter.
## Choosing the Right Class
Diablo 4 currently offers eight playable classes:
- **Barbarian** – A melee powerhouse who can wield up to four weapons simultaneously. Perfect for players who love being in the thick of battle.
- **Sorcerer** – Masters fire, ice, and lightning magic. Ideal for those who prefer destroying enemies from a distance.
- **Rogue** – Fast, agile, and deadly. Combines melee combat with ranged attacks and traps.
- **Druid** – Shapeshifts into werewolf or bear form and commands the forces of nature.
- **Necromancer** – Summons skeletons and golems while wielding the power of blood, bone, and shadow.
- **Spiritborn** – From the Vessel of Hatred expansion. Channels the power of spirits for devastating attacks.
- **Paladin** – A holy warrior with divine powers, combining melee combat with auras and blessings.
- **Warlock** – A dark spellcaster who wields demonic powers and curses.
> **Tip:** There is no wrong choice! Every class is viable for both solo and multiplayer content. Pick the class whose playstyle appeals to you the most.
## Your First Hours – What to Keep in Mind
### Explore the World
Sanctuary is a massive open world with multiple main regions. Take your time exploring the map – you will find dungeons, events, and hidden treasures everywhere.
### Follow the Main Quest
The campaign guides you through the story and unlocks important features. Follow the main questline first to learn the core mechanics.
### Season Rank & Season Journey
Since Season 11, the classic Renown system no longer exists in seasonal realms. Instead, you earn progress through the **Season Rank system**. The Season Journey is divided into 7 ranks, each offering valuable rewards:
- **Skill points** at Rank 1, 2, and 3
- **Paragon points** at Rank 3, 4, 5, and 6
- **Smoldering Ashes** for seasonal blessings
- **Crafting materials** and gear
Altars of Lilith and Tenets of Akarat still grant experience points and minor rewards, but no longer provide permanent stat bonuses.
## Season 12: Season of Slaughter
Season 12 is all about **Killstreaks** – slaughtering as many enemies as possible in quick succession:
- **Killstreaks** reward you with bonus XP and seasonal reputation. The more enemies you defeat in rapid succession, the higher your Killstreak tier climbs.
- **Bloodied Gear** – Special new items whose effects grow stronger based on your current Killstreak tier. Bloodied armor has affixes that scale with your Killstreak level, and Bloodied jewelry increases your chances of getting specific rewards.
- **The Butcher Mode** – You can temporarily transform into The Butcher and use his unique abilities to mow down hordes of enemies.
> **Tip:** Bloodied items can stack with other qualities – an item can be both Ancestral and Bloodied. All Bloodied affixes stack, encouraging fast and aggressive gameplay!
## Understanding Gear and Items
### Item Rarities
Items come in different rarity tiers:
- **Normal** (white) – Base items with no bonuses
- **Magic** (blue) – One to two random affixes
- **Rare** (yellow) – Multiple random affixes
- **Legendary** (orange) – Feature unique Legendary Aspects
- **Unique** (gold) – Extremely powerful items with fixed properties
- **Mythic** (purple) – The rarest and most powerful items in the game
### Tempering and Masterworking
In the endgame, you can upgrade your gear in targeted ways:
- **Tempering** – At the blacksmith, you can add new affixes to your items. Since Season 11, you can specifically choose the desired affix instead of relying on random rolls.
- **Masterworking** – Improves your item stats up to rank 25 and converts random affixes into greater affixes. Materials are obtained from The Pit.
## The Road to Endgame
After completing the campaign and reaching max level, the true endgame opens up:
- **Nightmare Dungeons** – Challenging versions of regular dungeons with modifiers
- **Helltides** – World events with massive enemy waves and valuable loot
- **The Pit** – An endless dungeon challenge with scaling difficulty, providing materials for Masterworking
- **World Bosses & Uber Bosses** – Powerful enemies for the best rewards
- **Seasonal Mechanics** – Each season brings new content; in Season 12, it is Killstreaks and Bloodied gear
