Every gem has three effects: one for weapons, one for armor and one for jewelry. Typical choices are damage gems in the weapon, armor or life gems in armor, and resistance gems in jewelry.

How do I upgrade gems?

At the Jeweler you combine lower quality tiers into the next higher one for gold and materials — all the way up to royal quality.

How do I get additional sockets?

The Jeweler adds sockets to gear for materials such as Scattered Prisms, provided the slot supports sockets.
